I once lived on a Caribbean island where the government was said to have consulted with scientists in order to solve an alleged snake overpopulation. First off, there really did not appear to be an abundance of snakes and particularly, not poisonous ones. But the island brainiacs decided to obtain the “natural enemy of the snake,” the mongoose, and to let them loose on the island.
So the mongooses arrived & made the island their home. But apparently not all mongoose are snake predators. And it was found that some snake & a mongoose (at least those chosen) not only have a lack of fondness for each other, but then simply try to avoid one another. It should also be noted, that mongoose are diurnal, while a snake is nocturnal, which makes avoidance that much easier.
The island was said to later have a population of both (although later in visiting, I saw neither so perhaps yet another animal was unleashed or who knows what the humans might have done).
My point with this little mongoose/snake story is to say that humans can be very stupid. When genetically modified mosquitoes are unleashed upon the world without any oversight for “field trials,” what could possibly go wrong? Or when tortured biolab monkeys or rats or insects made to be infectious by scientists, escape their prison into our population, do we ever learn from these “mishaps”?
Each time man decides “improvements’’ or interventions, they are not automatically & logically weighed or beneficial. An example of this is with the element fluoride.
Fluoride is naturally occurring in soil & water. It is found around the world in varying levels with no amount considered healthy. Fluoride is a carcinogenic endocrine disruptor, offering zero benefit to mammals. In excess, fluoride is extremely detrimental to health.
In the early 1900’s, a dental school graduate moved from the east coast to Colorado City, Colorado to open a dental practice. He was astounded to find that many of the local people had grotesque, brown stained teeth. Almost 90 percent of the city’s locally born children had mottled brown teeth, deemed a “deformity for life.”
It wasn’t until about 20 years later, excess fluoride in the water was discovered causing these health maladies. To study this, in 1931 a chemist from the dental hygiene department at NIH began learning how to sample & measure fluoride in water.
Fluoride in our water causes what is referred to as fluorosis. (We like adding [I]sis to words to signify a condition that is damaging and killing the body).
Fluorosis is known to cause cognitive problems (to include a loss of several IQ points), as well as thyroid, kidney & chromosome damage, sex hormone disruptions, respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, hematological, hepatic, renal, thyroid & damage to muscular/skeletal system.
Skeletal fluorosis causes disfiguring skeletal bone deformities, bowed legs, twisted & bent spines, osteoarthritis and damage to joints. Fluorosis bones viewed on x-rays resemble gnarled, lacy Swiss cheese.
Harvard University conducted a 14 year study that also showed a significant link between fluoridation and cancer, to include the rare cancer osteosarcoma. It has also been noted by the ADA, American Dental Association that fluoride should NEVER be used to mix concentrated baby formula.
In 1945, the World Health Organization, (the WHO), recommended additional fluoride added to our water, surmising there might be a benefit to cavities. In the 1940’s Michigan was the first to add fluoride to its water. Toothpastes with fluoride had also hit the market during this time.
In the 1950’s, the WHO International Programme for Milk Fluoridation added fluoride to milk in 15 countries for children in schools. The WHO also approved sodium & potassium fluoride, as food additives.
In 1980, fluoride was also added to table salt. In Europe, only 4 countries have optional salt fluoridation (Germany, France, Austria & Switzerland), while the majority have neither fluoridated water nor fluoridated salt. In the US, about 70% of public water supplies are fluoridated. By 2012, fluoride was added to water in the U.S., Brazil, Australia, Canada, Spain, Argentina, S Korea & New Zealand.
Western countries that have rejected fluoridation are: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden & Switzerland. Only 3 western European countries still practice water fluoridation: Ireland, Spain, the UK.
In some countries there is a definite need for DE-fluoridation. Fluorosis is considered a considerable health problem in 24 countries, to include India, Turkey, China Japan, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan. Fluoride deposits from the earth’s crust have a surplus in areas like India, & it is estimated that over 60 million people in India suffer from dental, skeletal and systemic fluorosis. India, China & parts of Africa with areas high in natural fluoride are taking measures to remove fluoride from water.
In the years 1999-2004, dental fluorosis, dangerous excess fluoride, was detected with 41% in American adolescents aged 12-15 years. https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/databriefs/db53.pdf
Meanwhile in Finland, they use their own approach to dental health. During WWII, Finland suffered a major sugar shortage, and with plenty of birch trees, they began using a substance, xylitol, from the birch trees as a substitute for sugar. In the early 1970’s Finnish researchers at the University of Turku discovered that xylitol can reduce plaque & forms of steptococci, one of the culprits of tooth decay. The Finnish are said to have good teeth, in part, due to chewing gum made with xylitol.
In keeping with practices that are scientific and that can improve health, Robert F Kennedy jr, has stated that he will remove fluoride from the water supply. Those who follow data driven science know that this “kooky brain-worm” man, possesses neurons that are indeed intelligently working, with Rfk jr’s motive to impart truth & his quest to improve health. Those who resist Rfk jr’s health initiatives, may be challenged with a mental handicap, perhaps due mental fluorosis?

Thanks for the reference Zara. Only problem is "too much" and "optimal" are marketing terms used to imply that "some" Fluoride might be useful, whereas it is a bio-accumulative Carcinogenic Endocrine disruptor offering zero benefit to mammals.
Kennedy may very well improve the health of the USA, despite all the name calling and opposition. I contacted my local city about water supply and removing fluoride. They are waiting for "guidance from the EPA".
